It finally happened, my Spec 3 died yesterday. Made it to the Woodward Dream Cruise and had to have a tow truck come get me

Need to get someone ordered and get it back on the road again

Car has a TR224, LT headers, ported TB, Ported intake, Ported heads, subframe connectors, torque arm, pan hard bar, lower control arms, drive shaft loop, etc.

It looks like I can get a LS7 from summit for 255 and an ls2 flywheel from autozone for 105. Just need to find a slave and I will be all set.

This car should have never had a Spec 3 4 puck. I have two friends that Spec 3 and LOVE them. In fact we were beating the crap out of one of them yesterday on Woodward. I dont want this to seem negative towards Spec, I know they make good stuff.

I've been considering a clutch for a while in my 97 which is different from the ls1s I know, but haven't been able to make up my mind on what stage and whether to to Spec Monster or other... I do hear a good bit of drama with spec clutches though

Your going to find good and bad with all clutches. Someone some how every make and model has been messed up.

Depends what you do and what you go with. If you put a Stage 1 into a race only car...expect failure. Same thing if you put a Stage 3 into a daily drive(my case)...expect failure.

Got it all apart, I will let the pics do the talking:

Can someone from Spec tell me when this clutch set was manufactured/purchased?

I had a Spec 3+ for a couple of years and it worked fair. It was chatter free but still grabbed and released very fast due to a NON marcel design. It ended up glazing the FW and PP so I decided to replace it. It also removed a generous amount of the FW surface to the tune it could not be resurfaced plus it was pounds heavier than a typical aftermarket disk which IMO, made it harder to speedshift. All this with street driving and one or two trips to the track. Would not get again especially considering the cost.

I am now running a stage 2 Competition clutch that has segmented ceramic on one face and organic on the other. For a streetable clutch, this thing flat out rocks. It grabs and releases much closer to an OEM disk due to the marcel design. It also bites when the need to dump it arises and has never given me a notion of slipping. Absolutely would get again and it is considerably cheaper than Spec.

I am looking at possibly putting an ls7 in my car. Where did you find the flywheel in autozone? I searched the site with no luck.

search for a 2006 GTO. The LS2 and LS7 flywheels are nearly identical from what I understand. It also looks like most LS2 stuff is now repacked LS7 stuff, probably to get manufacturing costs down. Doesnt hurt that the LS7 is still in production and LS2 has been stopped.

Did you buy this kit new? If so, when and where was it purchased? If not, I have a few questions to help assess time-frame. Is the disc 12" in diameter? What is its measured thickness at this point (it appears to be fairly worn based on the pics). The notation on the flywheel leads me to believe that it is manufactured by Fidanza. It's worth noting that you can see evidence of contamination on the parts too.

I did not buy it new, dont know when it was purchased new

It is 12" in diameter, I can measure tonight.

To call this one "well used" is an understatement. I have a friend that got almost 30k of beating the hell out of his Spec 3, quite impressive.

If it is a 12" unit then it is no older than 2008...but that was a long time ago! Let me know if you want to move on something else. Thanks!
