T-56 trans question

Just bought a GTO 6speed, cars great. When I had it in the air for the first time I noticed on the trans it said Dextron III fluid, made scence. Now that I think about it, it takes ATF fluid, was I seeing things? Is this correct? Why didn't tremec just specify gear oil, any reason for not using gear oil?

I work on toyotas and the older land cruisers that had full time AWD transfer cases took gear lube some of the newer two speed transfer cases take ATF. Cause its not full time 4x4.

There are fiber-based friction materials on the back side of the synchronizer blocker rings. This material requires the anti-friction additives found in ATF.
