broken struts .
Cant see well but likely have clashed clutch teeth on the sleeve and the gear(s)
If the pcs of broken strut went through the gearing you could have much more damage.

Are struts synchronizer keys?

Yes sir, keys, struts, dogs etc.. Since you are needing replacements you might as well upgrade to a billet design. We have some in stock if interested. These allow you to use a stock style spring.
