Default Help please

Question
2000 tremec t56 6 speed transmission. I’m replacing the rear outer tail shaft. Purchased new one. Transferred over all parts. When putting the housing on the tranny body I used a flat screw driver to align the reverse shift fork to line up with its respective hole in housing. Housing goes on all but the last 3/8”. Hitting something solid preventing it from “dropping” the final 3/8”. I used the grease method to determine contact points. Only contact point detected by grease is where the reverse shift fork is hitting the hole it is supposed to go in. I honed the hole to make sure opening was large enough to slide in. Spent 10 hours trying to figure out what is preventing it from dropping on. Measured every possible thing to measure. Between old and new, everything matches up. BTW, old shaft slips completely on easily. I’d like to think at 64 years of age, 50 years of being a gear head, my varied experience and common sense would make this procedure simple..WRONG....STUMPED...any suggestions (besides buying another tranny) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance guys.
Happy Holidays,

if your referring to the shift rod, in my small amount of experience i use a 8" 10" long screwdriver and sweep it from left to right and try to pull the rod towards the case and the tail section drops the last 3/8" .
