Wonderful. Bought the car with 140k or so back in 08 and didn't even get a virgin. Now I wonder how many of the transmission problems are poor assembly.
I was planning to refresh it myself. Would someone else's tinkering make this a worse idea or will a proper rebuild manual give me enough guidance to return it to factory spec anyway?

It may be anaerobic sealant which is used by GM and high quality builders. Hard to say since I can't touch it. It's normally used on manuals trans and transfer cases.
But that looks a little too orange for me. Anaerobic is reddish orange. more-so red. If it's very orange, then yes, someone has been in it and used some regular RTV stuff.
