Default is it my trans or my rear?

im am getting a horribly loud gear wine/metal grinding noise mostly when i let off and let the car declearate. i have had gear wine before, but never this loud and with this type of pitch, i had 4.56 put in and a posi that i have had for a while since my 4.10's. last time at the track i started to feel a lil slack develop in the drivetrain when doing burnouts with the linelock. i have about 25 or so low 1.5 high 1.4 60's on the gears and posi. is the posi about to take a crap, maby the gears, or does a tranny ever whine before dying?
i have only missed 3rd to 4th like twice cause i was out of practice and havent missed any other shifts, could it be the trans, it feels ok.
where you at andrew, i know you have some good input.

thanks guys

A decel noise sounds like its a rear gear problem, try different gears same speed see if it changes.

Hey Rodney,

When you had your gears put in, did you use a solid pinion spacer, or a crush sleeve?

When I had a crush sleeve on my rear pinion, it lasted a while, but eventually I got the nasty decel noises. That's because launching on slicks crushes the sleeve even further, and throws the gears out of adjustment. When we pulled mine out, it was no longer a symmetrical 'crush', but was wobbled towards one side.

So, if you don't have a solid pinion spacer, get one installed. If you *do* have a solid pinion spacer, then something else may have moved (if the rear wasn't assembled tight enough). Let me know about the sleeve/spacer and we can go from there.

Andrew

Thanks Andrew,
Shane@thunder and i put these gears in kinda last minute before the sbso, im 99% sure we used a crush sleve because we used the old one to get everything right before putting the new one in so we didnt have to crush it more than once. im guessing that is what it is. where can i get ahold of a solid crush sleve. this noise is driving me up the walls, it sounds like the noise you hear screaming off of a dragster when he his coasting at the end of the track.

see, i told ya you would have some imput.

btw, would this also be the cause of the extra slack im feeling when starting burnouts.

I think mine came from Thunder, but I don't exactly remember. It was like $39 or so (IIRC).

It's not the 'standard' installed part, but I believe it's what should be put in 12-bolts that will see high RPM dumps on slicks. Happened to another friend of mine too.

For what it's worth, after the solid spacer was installed, my Richmond 4.56's were quieter than ever. They stayed pretty darn quiet until I lost the posi (at NPR), and then when I installed the spool, I just "threw it in there", so the rear is noisy again. But at this point, I don't care about rear gear noise. I can't hear it over the bullets anyway.

Re-using the crush sleeve
It's like re-using the stock head bolts.

you are suposed to reuse the crush sleve when intalling and uninstalling them 5 or 6 times to get it all right, then you put in the new one and your done, i didnt keep the old one.

...and then it whines. Was the preload still within spec after all that? It does sound like the pinion (depth) moved since then...like camaroholic suggested. Good luck with it.

How where the pinion bearings? They go south alot as well, & will cause noise too. But not really on decell though.
Did you check the contact pattern on the drive & coast sides of the ring gear?

Heh.. make sure its not the easy stuff.. I got underneath mine when it was making noise and it was the pinion nut.. tightened it up with an impact.. 2 weeks later it came loose again and did a number on my posi (nice gear pattern in it).. Luckily the posi was still useable, and the gears were too.. but I went ahead and went with 4.30's Props to futral for the tow and help.

Good Luck,
Josh
