Default Newbie on the stick

I just got an 02 Z28 (sig) and I learned how to drive a stick the day before I got it. I'm not some joe schmuck who beats the car around, I picked up on manual operations pretty quickly and I can drive the car anywhere without a problem. I just wanted some advice from you guys on hard driving techniques. I'm not going to be carving corners like a maniac, I'll most likely only be straight lining it. If I'm trying to launch should I still feather it out or dump it at 3K or around there. (I'd have to practice) I'm on street tires. And I wanted to ask if there's any concerns about banging gears, once I push the clutch can I use all force necessary to bang it into the next gear? It has the factory hurst. Thanks a bunch.

The stock shifter does not have stops in the shifter. You can over shift the transmission and break internal pieces.

Get a Pro 5.0 short throw shifter and you can bag the gears all you want, as for launching on street tires take hold the rpms at 1500 to 2000 and feather the clutch out fast, it will spin a little but then will hook, it takes some practice but you will get it. Otherwise go get some nittos, you will love them

Yeah, don't do what I did the first time, slip the clutch at 2600 rpm.

Even my hair smelled like smoked clutch when I walked into the house.

Another little bit of advice. When you launch, if the tires get some spin, then hook and your car has a small bog before it takes off, you should probably launch a bit higher with a bit more spin so you don't get that small bog.

If you ever downshift learn how to rev-match. I am always surprised how many of friends don't rev-match when downshifting when I ride in their cars.

Thanks. No one really downshifts when they are racing though right. Your referring to pre race gear changes I assume.

Right, I'm not talking about drag racing, just driving in general like when you go to pass someone or racing from a roll or something.

I'm pretty sure they're talking about, for example, if your going 55 in fifth and you want to go to third. Hit the clutch, move the stick to third, and then rev the engine to match the rpms that it must be at to operate 3rd @ 55. Then engage the clutch. If thats not what you wanted to know, then I cant help ya.

Yeah, you're right. I think that's what he meant. I just started doing that a few months ago after three years of driving manual f-bodies.
