Default What's going bad?

These symptoms aren't making sense to me, can anyone help? I just filled the tranny with DexIII (non-ATF) two weeks ago. Since then I have driven it to Omaha (600 miles round trip) and to Thunder (1800 miles round trip) and it's just now starting to do this:

- Can't shift into reverse.
- All gears are getting harder to get into, nothing is smooth
- Shifts into every gear fine with the motor off
- Very little play in the clutch, 1/2 inch off the floor and you're moving forward

I first thought it was a synchro, but now ALL the gears are getting harder. That made me think the fluid needs changed. But, then I checked the clutch play and it's pretty small, so maybe a sympton w/ the master cylinder? I'm not a tranny guy but I'm willing to fix it all myself, just need to know where to start looking. I'll be chaning the fluid out to DexIII ATF or GM Synchromesh tonight or tomorrow morning. Anything else I need to be checking out? TIA.

Tonight on the way home it didn't want to come out of gear either. While in 1st gear, with the clutch all the way to the floor, I would roll forward slowly (NOT downhill either). I'm guess the clutch isn't completely dis-engaging (along with the no play issue). Maybe an air bubble somewhere???

How does the clutch pedal feel? Does it have alot of freeplay in it? That is the amount the pedal moves & isn't moving fluid. You can tell the difference in the feel of freeplay & moving fluid. If something is going in the hydraulics or you have air it will usually show itself in the pedal manners. Modified or stock clutch & master?

Z06 clutch, recently put back in after an engine install. Have driven it about 3000 miles since, this is just starting. Stock master. Hard to tell the difference in the pedals, at least for me.

Is the pedal have to go down far to start disenging the clutch? It is releasing right off the floor.
I like having an adjustable master just so I can manipulate the freeplay, it helps quite a bit.

About half way down if I remember right. (have to check tomorrow, I'm at my g/f's now) I'm looking into the adjustable master now, if I have to take mine off to bleed it I might as well replace it.

Toonz- Just replied to your post in the What fluid do you guys use in your T56? thread:

"Little confused by what your saying here in regards to Dexron III...are you saying you filled the transmission with a Dexron III fluid that isn't an ATF?

What brand of fluid exactly did you fill it with?

Chuck"

Toonz- Wow! I' d have to say this is the first I've heard of a Castrol product that is Dexron III that isn't an ATF...you don't have a part # or something from one of the bottles do you?

if the clutch is engaging 1/2" off the floor, then your clutch isnt disengaging fully. you need to bleed the thing really good, then might have to in and shim the slave out.

also, might want to check the color of the fluid in the master cylinder, if its all black and charred, it needs to be changed. this happens often in our cars due to the way that steel braided line runs right by the exhaust.

edit: i just realized this thread is dug up from the dead, hey JRTF83, check out the dates on posts before you dig 'em up if you cant find your answer by searching, start yerself a new thread! you know we are post-whoring it up here on ls1tech
