How hard to shift?

Default How hard to shift?

I've had my car for a couple months now and I'm pretty used to the shifter.
When i'm shifting at full throttle as fast as possible, especially 1-2 and 3-4, sometimes I don't realize how hard I'm actually putting the shifter into the gates.
My question is does strong lightning-quick shifting damage the transmission more than would be expected from normal wear? should I purposely not put so much torque onto the shifter once I feel it go into gear? Or does it really matter much?

If I remember correctly it does matter if you don't have stop bolts on your shifter like the Pro 5.0 does. If you shift it too hard your shift forks will actually go too far, or something of that nature.

To answer the question, yes it does cause more wear and if you want to shift like that you might wanna check out the Pro 5.0

I bent my 3-4 fork by slamming it in too hard.

If you hit the shift in other words it goes into gear, you cannot hurt it. The T56 has built in shift stops. On an episode of Horsepower tv they installed a pro 5.0 in a camaro and didnt even set the stops because of that fact...

But if you try to slam it into gear and it dosen't go for what ever reason(normally the clutch isnt all the in yet). That is when you cause damage or bend shift forks.

Shifting hard caused my shifter to lock up totally and the tranny would not go into any gear. Turns out something came out of place when I was making the 2-3 shift. Upon teardown @ inspection I found nothing wrong, broke, bent, missing so evidently taking the tranny apart caused something out of place to fall back in. I upgraded to a a forged 3-4 shift fork while I had it apart. I learned the hard way you don't need to slam the gears with mucho force to make a nice clean shift. Save yourself the hours spent on a cold garage floor on your back taking the tranny out!!!!! The T56 does have internal stops so it makes it impossible to overextend the shift but if you don't need to then don't do it.

I worry about speed of my shifts instead of the actual force... I'm still new to m6 though so dont mind me

Of course its the actual speed of the shifts that's important to me, but sometimes I end up becoming a little to excited and don't stop my throws soon enough. Glad the T56 has built in stops. I appreciate your guys' advice and experience.

most importantly make sure that your hitting the shift clean and direct. for example. on a hard 1-2 shift instead of going straight back into gear you might accidently shift pulling the shifter towards you but still going into 2nd. this will cause bent shift forks. so basicaly make sure all your shifts are clean and smooth. if in doubt dont let out the clutch. you'll thank yourself for it later saving your transmission.
