Default Multiple problems

Let me start off by saying I haven't done anything to the clutch or transmission, so I'm really new at this part of the car.

Stock clutch. ~87,000 miles. (yeah, that might be the problem right there)

Leaving the gas station the other night, I was stopped, waiting for traffic to let up. Clutch pedal was in all the way, brake pedal also in, car in 1st. While sitting there, I felt some strange movement/whirring/light grinding. Since then, I've noticed my shifts are getting much harder, and sometimes I have to take a couple tries to get it back into 1st. I'm not against changing out the clutch, if that's the problem. I just don't want to throw money at this unnecessarily.

Help, please!

I would start by bleeding and flushing the hydrolics. This may or may not help. Clean fluid will not hurt for sure. It sounds like the clutch may be going out with that many miles. But a bleed and flush will eliminate that as a problem. Also, if you do replace the clutch replace the master and slave at the same time.

Could be a shot pilot bearing. When I pulled my tranny the needle bearings were in peices/powder and it was causing weird problems like that. It had just over 100,000 miles on it and the previous owner had changed the clutch, but not the pilot bearing. It's worth taking a look at cause if it chews up your input shaft, that's at least $250 right there.

OK, I bled the clutch and checked the transmission fluid, but I'm still having problems. The noise is almost like a scraping, and usually comes after the clutch has been disengaged for a minute or two, and is more frequent the more I drive. I took it to a mechanic, and he isn't sure what the problem is, but he did mention encountering the same problem I had shifitng. When I downshift, it feels like it doesn't want to slide into gear unless I catch it just right, and he said the same thing. I originally thought maybe the clutch wasn't disengaging all the way, and that was locking out the downshift, but he said the clutch feels fine. The transmission fluid was really clean when I checked it, if that matters.

The mechanic suggested I take it to a transmission shop, thinking maybe the synchros are worn out. Is this a possiblity? The idea of a transmission rebuild is not pleasant, but if I need to do it, I will, since this is my daily driver and I need it to get to work.

Any suggestions?

P Mack is the winner!

Pilot bearing shot. And I'm getting a new clutch out of the deal.
