Resizing the length of Ripper shifter shaft

Resizing the length of Ripper shifter shaft I put a T-handle shifter on my ripper shifter, and now my fist hits the radio. I want to take a inch or so out of the shifter shaft. How should I do this, cut it a inch section out of it and weld it back, or should i cut some off the top and thread it over? I wonder if I would be chancing breaking a weld by slamming a gear?

I've had my Ripper shortened 2" to accomodate a new shifter handle...I just took it to a machine shop, gave them the right die, and had them do the grunt work. They cut the material off and rethreaded it. Any good machine shop can do this for you...cost me about $80, but I had some other work done at my time.
