It depends on what you are wanting out of your car. Both trannys can handle a lot of power. The hard part is going to be putting all of the power to the ground.
G-force makes some of the strongest 6speeds and they are not cheap. But a fully build auto is just as expensive.

Have fun and I hope this helps.

Either can be built for punishment, the 4l60e's are turds in stock form, not to sure on the T56's. I know for a fact a thick wallet will get you a 4l60e that is suitable to punishment (have a few local guys for example putting some serious HP and hard shots out of the hole), there's a local guy who specializes with these transmissions that has made a name for himself, not to sure on an actual good distributor though.

Now that I'm stepping up my racing, I kinda wish I had an auto.
They are easier to launch, are more consistent, you can't misshift and **** **** up, and great 60 foots seem to come with ease.
With M6's, I'm always worrying about breaking ****. The 10 bolt blows much quicker, the clutches get killed, and the posi's in the 12 bolts get trashed under high HP and high rpm launches. I think the suspension takes a harder hit too since many M6 guys are dumping out at around 6-7k.
I've had sticks since my '88 IROC, and this was 4 F-Bods ago. I just love to shift and hear high rpms (my rev limit is at 6800.) With the M6's you get higher trap speeds, and do better when racing from a roll.
edit: And I almost forgot gear whine with the M6's. How could I forget that!

I say I want to do it, but wonder if I will miss shifting. As opposed to misshifting!
Maybe it's the challenge when drag racing, or the control factor. Perhaps it's both.
But man, talk about a love-hate relationship...

Hmmm well I havent had a love-hate relationship with my 4l60. The way I would explain it is...always good to me, but never a challenge, which is what I think im ready for...

It's a tough call - the M6 can't be beat for fun factor, but it's more inconsistent and rough on drivetrain parts. If you want to go fast, you'll probably spend the same $$ either way, but for mild (drag)cars an A4 would probably be best.
I was originally looking for an A4 car, but I couldn't pass up my car when I found it, so I ended up with an M6. I'll probably lose some races because of missed shifts and have to buy a 12 bolt sooner, but it's definitely more fun to shift for yourself - oh yeah, and you can't beat cruising at 90mph in 6th at 2100 RPM!
