Default Grinding 3rd and 4th

My 2000 SS transmission problems began when I still had a stock shifter. I started off sticking in 4th gear, and after a few times it began to pop out of 3rd. Then I wouldn't go into 4th, but 3rd was fine. Now, it grinds going into 3rd and 4th, and will not downshift into those gears at all. Within the past week I have noticed the clutch slipping (stock) and when I get on it a little the clutch pedal feels like it doesn't come out all the way. I have a pro 5.0 shifter with stock clutch and master cylinder (no drill mod yet)

Are these problems related, or do I need to tackle both the problems seperately. Thanks in advance.

Chris

I had close to the same problem, and so has my friend with his 02 T/A. But for both of us it was after we did a new clutch. But what it sounds like is your shift fork is bent for 3/4. It is a piece of crap aluminum shift fork and it bends pretty easily. Im not sure on how you will get that fixed if it is it, the new steel shift for is about $55.00. But you most likely will need a whole rebuild kit now. They are about $250.00. Because i am pretty sure your synchros are gone now also. Then you need to get you a better clutch, the drill mod, throw out bearing, pilot bearing(while your at it), and master cylinder. If your not gonna be pushing a lot of power RAM makes a pretty good clutch, and i really like mine. Im not sure on the master, i would say get Mcleod, because they are proven to push extra hydraulics. I got a RAM master, not sure if it even does anything over stock. Here is a rough list of what i think you need and costs.
Tranny rebuild kit: $250.00 (sometimes comes with steel shiftfork)
Clutch w/Flywheel: $800.00
Master Cylinder: $150.00 (RAM) $306.00 (Mcleod)
Throw out bearing/slave cylinder: $125.00
Pilot bearing: Not sure, but its pretty cheap
Most of these prices are from thunder racing. But this is just a quick online diagnosis. The best thing would be for you to get it checked out and see what your looking at. Remember rebuilds unfortunatley usually suck and never work the same. But you may get lucky and not have much messed up.

I was planning on getting a Z06 clutch, billet slider keys, steel shift fork, and Carbon syncros, along with the rebuild kit. Is it possible to do myself?

First off what state do you live in? If its in California then i would gladly help you do the work for free one of these weekends. Unless you are familiar with trannies, you will need a shop to do that. And if your doing a clutch you should do the master cylinder, slave cylinder and pilot bearings at the same time. Also the ZO6 clutch will just wear out fast on you. They arent much better than our own and give out pretty fast. Like I said though, you can do everything but the tranny work yourself. And it is pretty easy to do. There are a few specialized tools that you will need though. If your gonna do the master you will need a power bleeder. For the drill mod you need a cordless drill and 1/8 drill bit. For doing the slave cylinder you dont need, but it greatly helps to get a quick disconnect tool. Again not a must, but someties ends up being a must, for the pilot bearing a slide hammer is needed. They often break apart once you try to jimmy them out. Then you will need a torque wrench, and some swivel sockets, i think that about covers all the non-basic tools required. If you want you can send me a PM or get in touch with me on AIM my name is pewterwssicc there also.

I actually live in St. Louis, but thanks for the offer. I was thinking of giving the tranny a try, the rebuild kit comes with a manual and I have a friend that knows a little about them.
