I am doing a clutch swap and I cant get my tranny to go in all the way. It likes about 1 inch, The dowels are almost started. I have checked and double checked everything. Is there something I am missing?
Is the slave hooked up to the master? This will allow the slave to compress easier. It give the fluid in the slave a place to go.
Also if you use a cheap alignment tool that does not fit well, the clutch might not be lined up exactly right.
Now to the contraversial part
.
If you are %110 sure that the tranny is lined up correctly and that the tip of the input shaft is in the pilot bearing you can use the bolt to pull the tranny the last little bit. If the tranny is not lined up EXACTLY right you will destroy the pilot bearing and possibly damage the tranny or clutch. Everytime I have pulled my tranny(more than I can count) I have had to do this. The tip of the input shaft that fits into the pilot bearing is almost exactly 1 1/8 inch. If the gap between the bellhousing and tranny is less than 1 1/8 inch you are probably ok. Tighten the bolts slowly and evenly until it is in.
Some dissagree with this, some don't
Just go slowly and carefully.

Just did mine and I agree with madss except for the part about tightening the bolts. I would say your tranny is not perfectly inline with the bearing. Keep playing with it and adjust the height of the trans. Are you using a trans jack? Do you have someone helping you?? I did mine myself the other day... first time with a M6. Just take your time and don't force anything.
That's what she said...
put it in gear (1st) and spin the output shaft while wiggling it into place, it will help line the splines up of they aren't already.
i would also try the hooking up the slave trick, you could also try and crack the bleeder valve while you install it, that fluid doesnt compress

Ok I got it. I put the bolts in and pulled it up the rest of the way. It liked less than a inch so I figured that it was probably the pressure from the slave. Thanks for the advise.

.Tomorrow: tranny fluid, and hydraulics. I hope filling and bleeding the new master and slave goes well..............
