What do you think the ideal shift point is for our cars? I was glancing over a book called "Auto Math" that has all sorts of formulas in it. It said the ideal shift point is 10% above the RPM where you make max hp. So on a stock F-body that makes max power @ 5,700rpm we should be shifting at 6,270 rpms. What are your takes on this? The book states the reason for shifting above the max hp rpm was to keep the car in the middle of the torque curve.

The ideal shift point on a stock LS1 (or even mildly modded) is right before the rev limiter. I played around a lot with shift points myself and found this to be true. I even plotted my dyno numbers into a shift point calculator and it too confirmed it.

So find out where on your stock tach the rev limiter kicks in (since every tach is different, and not all are accurate) and then shift just 50rpm or so before that point.

Torque management comes in on gear changes. The stock cam is the limiting factor on the power band. I've found that stock motored A4 cars with bolt ons like 6300-6400 shift points to get the most out of it. It improves the shift extension.

I'd say you shift at the RPM when rwtq*tranny gear ratio*rear-end gear ratio is less than what it would be after shifting into the next gear. Else shift right before the rev limiter.
