Why would 5th and 6th go

Why would 5th and 6th go Please someone help me. I have 02 SS LE M6. Bought it with 5th gone. All other gears shifted fine other than that. It grinds and won't go into 5th. Didn't have the money to fix so the very little I drive it I would go from 4th to 6th. Well, recently it wanted to grind going into 6th and now it'll go in but it acts like its in neutral. Won't accelerate; just revs. It also shakes real bad and grinds when I release the clutch after putting it in 6th. What could be wrong with either or both gears and how to fix. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I bet you stripped the 5-6 gear and the mainshaft . This is a common problem on car with a lot miles on them or a lot of hard 5th and 6th gear driving . There is an aftermarket mainshaft and 5-6 gear set that will eliminate this problem .
I would recomend getting it fixed ASAP. I had my car brake 5/6 only drove it 50 miles home and you would not bielve the metal I drained out when I got home. I guess shifting into 5 and running to 155 mph on the track finally caught up with it. Later John

Thanks for the advice. I just bought it a month ago. I knew of the original owner and it was his everyday vehicle. Well, I have two options. First, let the car sit for a while till I gain the funds to fix it(Just ordered a set of tires for it $750); or, sell the car cause me and girlfriend were thinking of getting a place in the near future and that'll be one less bill to worry about.
