Default pilot bearing help please

hello everyone
well im in the process of swaping the A4 for the M6 in my 98 formula and I got stuck in THE PILOT BEARING, is there already a pilot bearing in my crank?
if there is do I need to replace it with a new one?
how can I tell if there is a pilot bearing, I dont see anything that resenbles a bearing.....
another thing, I went to oreiley and asked for a pilot bearing and they gave me a pilot bushing, its just a piece of metal that resembles a ring with no bearings whatsoever, so is this a part that I need as well?
I thank you for all the help in advance
David

I don't think you had one, don't see why you'd need one with an auto. But to be sure, if there is a hole in the back of the crank the same size as the pilot bushing they gave you, then no you don't have one. Whether you use the bushing or the bearing depends on personal preference. I used the bearing.

so in other words, You can use either one?
how does that work, doesnt a bearing reduce friction as oposed to the bearing beeing metal to metal and not beeing able to slide/////
there is a hole in the crank but I dont think nothing is there just want to make sure
thanks

You would use grease on the bushing so it wouldn't really be metal to metal. Yeah, you will have a little more friction with the bushing, but the advantage is it can't fall apart like the needle bearings can. My 100,000 mile pilot bearing fell apart and chewed up my input shaft.

Pilot bearing should look something like this. This isn't an LS1 pilot bearing, but it is real close.
