Default tips on driving manual??

Hey guys, it's been about well, forever, since i last posted on LS1tech but i am having my auto trans from my Hawk pulled and i'm having a Manual put in her place. I can't tell you how excited i am, i have always wanted a stick, but found the Hawk with the auto and figured i'd be a dumb *** if i passed on that! Well, i was just wondering if anyone had some comments for me, or some tips for driving an F.Body with a stick. I am having the whole ordeal done by "blank name" *They aren't a sponsor on here, but if you would like to know who is doing it PM and i can tell you) and they are a great shop, i take my car there for EVERYthing. Anyway, it will be a built T-56 Tranny, McLeod clutch and Fly Wheel, and a Pro 5.0 w/ Lou's Short Stick shifter. If you guys have any comments or tips please let a novice to stick in on them! Thanks guys

Tris

you really have to learn how to drive a manual on your own. it's hard to give tips. one thing i can suggest is to not do many power shifts immediately following right after the clutch is installed. this consists of holding the gas down completely while you shift gears. it's fun as hell to do, but sucks a big one if you don't pull it off!

I'd recommend practicing a little on a car without such a grabby clutch. It'll be a little easier to learn how to modulate throttle and clutch to get yourself moving.

Congrats on the swap though, I'm about to do the same thing myself.

Advice?? If you are still running a stock rear end, then don't launch too hard if you drag race. The T56 puts hella more strain on the rear.

Other advice. . .practice, practice, practice.

I am not familiar with the drill mod, would you elaborate perhaps? As for the rear end, i am also beefing that up to a Stange 12 Bolt with 4:10's at the same time.

Where are you getting all this Done? I see you live in IL also how much is it costing you (including the rear)? (I plan to do the same thing but w/ 3.73's and a different clutch)

The drill mod i don't believe will be necessary...Doesnt it haveta do w/ a hose or tube that has to deal w/ the STOCK hydraulics? maybe I'm wrong but anywho.

Practice taking off near your house so there won't be any need to worry of the engine dying. TAKE IT EASY on the new cluthc and rear! Take in the proper break in methods. You may want to row through the gears a few times while stationary to get used to the shifter. I'd say accelerate high enough in the RPM range to where you may be able to slowly shift into the next gear as well to get a feel of it, as the practice comes you'll be much quicker w/ it.

Send me a PM Thanks. I'm mostly concerned w/ the price

If you're just learning to drive a stick, here's the best advise I can give (I've tought many friends/family members to drive manual this way):

Do it in a loose gravel parking lot! A WHOLE lot easier on the car if you're rough with it and really teaches control! (turn of tcs if equipped)

I figured it out for myself when I was teaching an old girlfriend how to drive my old Ford Ranger (first car, $97 a month payment and brand new!). About 30 seconds on pavement was enough for me... That's when it hit me...all this lurching is killing my neck and probably my transmission, if only the tires had minimal traction, so I took her to a nearby church with a gravel parking lot.

15 minutes of driving and she had it... my truck was saved as was my neck and back. Since then I recommend it to anybody/everybody!

as far as manual cars go the hawk im picking up moday was real easy to drive....i hadnt driven a stick in almost a year and i had no probs...my last car that was stick was a civic so even b4 that my driving was spoiled since the cars pretty much drive themselves..i was expecting the clutch to be unforgiving but the cars have alot of feedback..but borrow a friends car for a day then drive the hawk..dont wanna put undue wear on your car when u can on some1 elses

Driving a stick should be common sense (don't know why it's not for most women) I drove mine off the lot without any previous experience with manuals.
If your gonna downshift to pass somebody, blip the throttle while the clutch is in and your putting it into gear so that the car isn't shocked too hard when you release the clutch.
www.installuniversity.com has the drill mod included in the middle of their master cylinder install. (drill out restriction in fluid line so your clutch grabs better and lasts longer instead of slipping/burning no matter how fast you pop it)
Most of all have fun bangin' gears.

I learned to drive a manual in my car when I bought it last summer. For me at least it was one of those things where it took a few minutes in a parking lot to be able to drive on the street, but to get really good and fluid with it in all situations will take awhile. I wouldn't try to speedshift it that much until you get comfortable with it. I started doing that about the 3rd or 4th day after I bought the car. I did hit gears most of the time, but there were a few instances where I'd miss a gear, mainly 3rd, and it has finally caught up with me. My transmission needs a rebuild at only 82k... If I had to do it over again, the first mod would have been a Pro-5.0 shifter.
