My M6 Synchronizers
... Second gear is grinding 90% of the time when I shift above 3500rpms ... 3rd and 4th are still okay. I have about 46,000 miles on the car. It's a little disappointing that they didn't last longer.
Anyways, I have three questions. The first is ... anyone have a reccomendation for a reliable shop to replace my synchronizers in the Houston or Austin area at a reasonable rate? I'm probably going to avoid dealerships at this time.
Second question is a two part question ... how difficult is it to do the job yourself and is there a T56 service manual readily available showing how to do it? I'm relatively mechanically inclinded and don't mind doing the work myself as long as I feel I have a handle on how to do it.
Third question is ... are there any aftermarket synchronizers of better quality available for the T56 that will last a bit longer?
Thanks for the help ... Jared H.

Re: My M6 Synchronizers
Yea, do not take it to a dealership...all they will want to do is replace the trans...they won't bother to fix it if its a syncro, they will just order a new one...you could pick up a manual, but the trans seems kind of complicated...rebuilds can be up to $1500 bucks or higher...
I do not think there are any aftermarket syncros out yet...the only aftermarket thing that was released lately was the steel shift fork...
Good Luck

Re: My M6 Synchronizers
BigBos ... thanks for the info ... If it comes down to it, I may swap the tranny out myself for a GM certified rebuilt T56 with a 3yr/36000mi warranty ... and in that case ~$1500 doesn't sound that bad.
Racer88 ... I may do that if I can't find something locally ... thx for the info on the viper sychros ... why are they better?
Anybody else? TIA JHH

Re: My M6 Synchronizers
Jared, the Viper parts are strenghtened. But a re-built T56 is not that bad...I believe you can get one from Tremec direct for around $1300.00
Good luck on your tranny, and keep in mind that guy Norm at Westech is nice enough to even sell you the parts and give good information.....
He recommends drilling the slave (drill mod)....I would find out more about that. My boyfriend did the drill mod and has had no problems w/ his re-built tranny so far.......LOL

Re: My M6 Synchronizers
Found an online service manual for the T56 if anyone is interested ... www.spicer.com.mx/tremec/catalogo/consulting.html
Racer88 ... thanks for the info ... I'll probably give him a call and see what the cost would be to upgrade the synchros as well as get the lower first, second, and third gears that the Z06 is getting ... might be cost prohibative ... won't know until I call ... thx again.
No recommendations on local Austin or Houston area shops to do this yet ... anybody?
