Quick Manual Trans Q I just purchased a 97 Audi 2.8L A4. I noticed when in 1st gear I hear a chatter type noise. Once I'm in 2nd the noise stops (*it does not happen in any other gear including reverse). Is this the clutch or something else in the trans (I don't believe its engine related).
If its at launch, its called launch rattle and is caused buy the friction take-up of the disc. It should be fairly short duration. You can improve it by releasing the clutch quicker.

Nope not at launch. It starts when the clutch starts to grab and continues in 1st gear. I'm gonna drive the car around some more and jack it up to maybe find the source. (No plates or anything so I really haven't drove the car).
