Default Is this normal?

I just got my 2000 z and since it's my first RWD car and everything is new about this car, I'm worried about a few things. So let me know if what I'm experiencing is normal or not?

When I shift gears up I always hear my tranny, I know that it's right under me and I was wondering if it's ok to hear the metal in the tranny doing the work. Sometimes it's pretty loud and just feels very weird. It shifts fine; takes only a second and engages into the gear right away, it's just the sound that makes me nervous.

So should I be worried about this?

Is there anyone in Baltimore area that I could visit and they'd let me drive their car or at least let me hear how it shifts?

thanks

you are going to hear some noise especially with a aftermarket shifter. As long as it engages smooth and doesn't grind you shouldn't have a problem 1st-4th are usually a little noisey since they are a little coarser cut than 5th and 6th

Didn't want to start another thread, but how normal is it to feel heat coming out of the tranny inside the car?

When a I drive for a while and put my hand all the way down where the housing of the shifter is, it's really hot there. Is that normal??

Everything is so different about this car. I need help!

T 56's are going to make some noise, usually worse when its cold. As long as things arent grinding you should be alright. It wouldnt take to long to get under your car and do a quick check of the trans, make sure you have enough fluid and that there arent any leaks, might help to put your mind at ease. As far as the heat are you talking about putting your hand under the boot? Yes you are going to have alot of heat under there, thats is why the boot is there, to keep the heat out of the passenger area.

As others have said, if you hear the tranny making noise then likely you have an aftermarket shifter of even a "short stick". Basically, the factory "stick" has an isolator to prevent transmission noise from transmitting up thru the stick.

Do a search on "short stick noise" or something similar.

As you can see in my sin, I have 5.0 short shifter, so all of those vibrations and noises are normal I suppose

thanks

My car makes a lot of heat there too and i told myself next time i pull the carpet up, if I ever have it out, I was gona add some more insulation to it, but im just worried about not being able to hear some abnormal early warning noises.

does anyone with the aftermarket shifter have alot of noise in 5th or 6th around 85-100mph and higher??? i have a B&M shifter and at those speeds i swear something is gonna break all you can hear in the passenger compartment is the gears in the trans with the clutch in, if it's in N, whatever anything above those speeds it's extremely loud this is my first 6 speed and i don't want to start another thread. The trans shifts fine, fluid is ok is this normal also???

I don't think I have much noise at those speeds. Definitely some, but nothing that radio wouldn't overpower.

Well, as you can see they told me that noises in the tranny that I hear come mostly from the shifter, so I assume yours is the same way.
