Default What's the 'drill out mod' on a M6 tranny?

Please see the what the person that responded to my post said in this thread of messages:

If anybody could tell me what is meant by the 'drill out mod' then I might have an idea if it's something I can do.

Thanks!

Locate your clutch master cylinder, its located underneath the power brake setup on the firewall, passing thru the firewall and connected to the rod on your clutch pedal.

You need to remove that master cylinder assembly (slight pain in the ***) and then disconnect the braided stainless line coming out of it (which goes to the slave cylinder in your tranny).

Get a drill bit that just barely fits into the end of that braided line (from the end you disconnected from the Master) and stick it in there and drill until the bit passes thru. The end of the line is somewhat restricted by a metal ring, and we are simply drilling it out to match the same diameter of the line itself.

Hey Tony,

Thanks for the response! Is this something that would need to be done on a LT1 powered car also? ('96 T/A) I have heard of clutch master cylinder issues on LS1 powered cars but not LT1 powered cars.

This issue of the shifting somewhat rough never happened until that guy drove my car. You can see what I'm talking about in the original story in the link. So it's a clutch problem that's causing this or is there something that is actually wrong in the tranny that is causing those rough shifts?

I have noticed that my clutch is starting to go south in so far as if I hot lap the car on the 2nd hard launch it will slip a little off of the line, but besides that I haven't noticed anything of it sticking or once I put it in the clutch doesn't seem to be connected in any way anymore. I can have the car running, have the clutch all the way in and go through the gears at like a stop light and it doesn't feel like there is any power going through since the clutch feels disengaged. Please explain if the point I just brought doesn't have any effect on what I'm speaking of.

Thanks again for the response and thanks in advance for any more info you can provide!

Oh, and in case this info is needed. The car has around 62K for miles on it and it's the original clutch that came with the car.

I got the car at 45K miles but it had a lot of highway miles on it so that's why I think the clutch has lasted as long as it has before strarting to slip some on hard launches. I didn't start slipping until like around 55K miles maybe.

For every day street driving the clutch hooks up just fine though.

Nice Tony, so what effect does this have?

Maybe I should use the search function!

The drill out 'mod' is meant for one thing. It increases the flow on fluid from the master to the slave, which in turns make it easier to shift at higher RMPs. The LS1 master is not sufficient for the higher RPMs that our car makes. Many have problems shifting from 2nd to 3rd at 6100+ RPMs. This mod will almost eliminate this problem.

I have not heard of to many problems with the older LT1 type transmission/master. Not sure if it because of better hyros or less power generated by the LT1 vice the LS1.

If your clutch is giving out, replace it. If you don't plan on going over 400hp, go with the Z06/LS6 clutch set up, but still do the 'drill-out mod'.
