You would have to disassemble the whole transmission, and have a press and puller for the gears. Some one correct me if im wrong.

If it shares the same design as the T-5 (never had one apart to tell), you can just unbolt the front "snout" from the trans and pull the shaft right out- but be careful not to drop the roller bearings inside the shaft into the trans when removing it. I honestly have never seen a T56 up close to inspect it though, so this could be totally wrong. Hopefully someone else will chime in.

Sorry, just looked at some pics- completely different. It does "look" from the pics like you can unbolt the front half of the case and seperate it, but I don't know how involved swapping hte shaft is from there. Sorry, I should have looked before opening my mouth lol.

If you are careful you can take off the front of the tranny and get the input shaft out and replace it.
But it helps do know how things go together in there
The input shaft is also your 4th gear.
The new input shaft will need a Bearing pressed onto it.
But it can be down with out totally dissassembling the tranny.
You would need to have it held up by a friend on its tail shaft to do it.
Putting it together will be fun, for you will have to line up the Main shaft , the secondary shaft, the Main shift rod and the reverse /5-6 shift rod.

You will also have to be sure the struts(keys) of the synchronozer are properly aligned or the trans will be locked up.
This process is not for the non-t56 person.
