Default M6 4th gear speedshift oddity...

i was coming home the other night, and was really giving it hell! first, second, third, and when i went to bang 4th the car bucked a few times HARD like the driveshaft was broken/bent or 4th gear was gone. thinking back it may have been the tranny contacting the floor of the car. guess what happened next? it drove absolutely fine with no sign of any damage. could it have been caught between two gears?

relevant mods are: UMI everything, inland steel driveshaft w/ 1350's, pro 5.0 shifter, hurst pistol grip handle, 255/50/16 et street radials, moser 12 bolt housing w/ 33 spline axles, tru-trac, and 3.73 gears.

i thought 'well, there it went!' but to my dismay everything still worked. any ideas?! wtf!

well, i guess i never thought of that, but i would've remembered an over-rev; the weird thing was, after i left off the throttle i moved it out of 4th and back into 4th with no side to side movement. is 3rd-2nd really THAT easy? i ask becuase i've owned a 6-speed f body since 99 and i can honestly say it's never happened to me.

It's not easy if you're not trying to do it, but if you're trying to shift quickly, it can be done because I'd imagine you're pulling back on the shifter stick pretty hard to get it into the gate as quick as possible. So, yeah it can be done relatively "easy" if you're trying to shift real fast. I've done it twice, but at low rpms, so no pushrods were bent. I'd check yours to be on the safe side.

exactly, when you are pulling the stick back with a lot of force, u can easily override where the car wants the shifter to slide.....but if u went out of 4th then back in....i guess this isnt what happened......but I know personally when i get in that mood, that drive the hell out of it mood....the adrenaline kicks in and i couldnt tell u where my hand was anyways......good luck...

It sounds exactly like what happened to me when I did a 3-2 shift. Remember, under torque the drivetrain tries to rotate over. This puts 2nd gear a bit closer to where 4th usually is.
And doing it doesn't automatically mean an over-rev. In fact, the engine was putting on the brakes and that's why your rear end bounced down the road.

It's the best explanation for what you describe. In my case, the rear diff and ring/pinion were damaged.

Sounds like 3-2 to me...I've done it twice and it sounds like the world is going to end but *cross your fingers* it will all be fine.

The only bad part is the mechanical noise can overshadow the over-revving...so keep an eye out.
