It is the friction "take up" of the clucth application. It is a feel event but you can hear the restults= gear rattle or other NVH things .
Chatter and rattle are a larger concern with aftermarket clutchs because the "tuning "of the center springs is not generally very good( some have no springed stage at all).

If you mean a rattle noise when you take off in 1st gear , yes thats somewhat normal. It should lesten if you apply the clutch quicker and should not last beyoud a full clutch engagement. As I said before this condition is generally worse with an aftermarket clutch.

my spec 3 does a sort of grinding noise if I slip it just right.
It sounds like there may be a large chunk of something in one the friction pucks. It works fine and has been doing it for at least 20k miles so I don't worry about it. It sounds just like a dining room chair sliding on hard wood floor.
