Explain the problems with t56 trans?
Im pondering the thought of going with a 120ish shot, so i spend a lot of time reading up in the n2o section here on this board. I see and overwhelming number of posts about t56 tranny's. I just read about 3 posts saying that if your going to start modding your car you should really upgrade your tranny and rear first. I know that they stock 10bolt is weak but what is wrong with the tranny? Also when they say "upgrade your tranny" do they mean buy a new one or put parts in your stock one or what? Also with just standard bolt ons (full exhaust, lid, intake, cam) do i really have to worry about my trans and rear giving out? The car wont be raced at the track but will have the occasional burn outs and what not.

Typically when you upgrade the tranny the basic mods are steel shift forks and carbon blockers. They are only a couple of hundred bucks in parts.
The stock shift forks are aluminum and are prone to bending. Once you do that you are good for 600hp+ with the proper clutch.

the rear went out on me when my car was stock- its the weakest point in our cars, especially for a m6. As far as the tranny goes, I am still on my stocker and it sees some track time. As long as you don't go to the track the tranny should hold a decent amount of power. If your rear goes buy a 12 bolt or a 9 inch- not worth the money to try to make your stocker stronger, just wasting money. If or when your t-56 goes you can just get it rebuilt. there are a couple of sponsors that do this and are very reasonable.

I rebuilt 3rd and 4th on mine for $9 using stock parts from D&D. I lost 3rd from missing it a few times at the track. The rear held up on my car until I did the H/C swap. 4 passes at the track and it let go. Now I am running a junk yard rear out of 6 banger... saving for the 9"
Aside from a couple tools (gear pullers) rebuilding it was quite easy.

Thanks guys, i wasnt sure exactly what was wrong inside the t56. Would the swap for steel forks and blockers be hard to do by myself? Also im guessing the best time to do it all would be wait till i have enough for a new rear and clutch. Then pull it all apart and do it that way?

I'd run it until you have some issues. Nothing inside the tranny breaks except for synros, forks and struts. Without abuse, it should last quite a while.
Rebuild wise, you need a LONG puller for 6th gear, snap ring pliers and a press. Other than that with a good exploded view and some patience it goes together pretty easy (I think)
