clutch install problem

clutch install problem well..the problem doesnt really have to do with gettin the new clutch in, because that is already done and wasnt too bad actually. What i am havin problems with is that i cant get the tranny to go back in. I have checked many times to see if the clutch is centered and everything and all looks well. Does it just take a lot of time to make sure i have the right angle or does it take some force to just slide it back in, cuz i remember when i pulled it out, it didnt just slide right out all too easily.
Re: clutch install problem Thats pretty normal. I have installed more LS1 clutch's than I can count, and most of them were hard on getting the tranny back in. Just make sure you're using the alignment tool to keep the disk straight, and line up everything as straight as possible. If you feel the splines start to slide in, but not all the way start a couple of bolts and see if it pulls it through. If you can pull the tranny in without using to much force on that bolt, keep doing so with the other bolts. Do NOT force anything to go in, if it doesn't want to...

Re: clutch install problem if it gets within a half inch, then you can pull i home with the bolts, as long as you feel it not hitting something 'solid' then the resistance is just the pressure plate and slave spring pushing on each other

Re: clutch install problem Try lowering/raising the rear of the tranny and see if that helps. Also turn the input shaft slightly. They always seem to get stuck.

Re: clutch install problem Ditto on what Justin said. Also, having someone pushing the tranny in from the back and having someone moving the bellhousing up and down (wiggling it slightly) seems to help as the motor is sitting down with no tranny back there.

Re: clutch install problem PLEASE do not use the bolts to pull the tranny in! This will often bend the clutch disc and can cause problems ranging from non release and dragging to severe chatter.
Not sure if you can do this on the LS1, but we used to hook up the release mechanism at the point the tranny stops going in, have someone lightly push on the pedal while you work the trans the rest of the way in. This lets the disc move to absolute center and avoids further damage.

Re: clutch install problem you can pull the trans together (you have to) once the input shaft is alligned.. dont push the pedal down with the trans not totally flush with the motor or you will pop the slave.
