need help please - slave/clutch failure ???

Default need help please - slave/clutch failure ???

Sitting in traffic... I push clutch pedal down and drop it into first gear. As I let up, the car dies and the clutch pedal drops to the floor. I pulled it out of gear and pushed the car to a parking lot.

I think slave cylinder instantly, but the technicians out at Friendly Chevrolet in Springfield, Illinois say otherwise. They say it is the slave cylinder and the entire clutch assembly (clutch, pressure plate, etc). They are telling me it is $1100 for parts alone. Personally, I think they are BSing me on this one.

Frist question is how can I tell if they are trying to screw me over on the repair and charge me for a whole new clutch when all I need is a new slave cylinder - is there something I can look for to show that the clutch is dead too?

Second question is what parts should I upgrade to if both the slave cylinder and the clutch are actually blown?

While it may seem that the dealer is trying to rip you off, it is likely that they are recommending that you replace the clutch unit while you have the tranny out, saving on future labor when its new clutch time. I'm just guessing that you are still on your stock clutch. I had good luck with the SPEC stage 3 Kevlar. It lasted a good year on N20 before starting to slip under stress of back to back runs. Its still fine on the street, however, and I'd keep running it if I didn't use N2O. I have the Ram combo waiting to install. Its the 402 pplate, 910 sintered iron disc, and 1550 billet fwheel.

Oh, almost forgot to mention that you should upgrade to the latest slave - ...145 p/n and I'd get an adjustable m/c as well.

Brother's right Tyler. Not that he needs anyone to back him up, but any '98-'00 that doesn't have the upgraded hydraulics('01 master cylinder, or adj. model, and '01 slave cylinder) should get it upgraded when they have a new clutch assem. installed. I'm going with the McLeod adj. master cylinder,'01 slave cylinder, and the SPEC stage 3 carbon clutch,pressure plate, and billet steel flywheel set up.
