Default T56 in a 944

Alright so after much uneventful searching, I've come to ask these forums. I own a 1986 Porsche 944 Turbo 5 Speed and am in the process of wiring an LS1 in it. I've read a lot of posts about the transmission tunnel not being big enough for a T56 because of the rear transaxle, but my question is with a corvette transaxle or some modding. Can it be shoehorned in?

All work is preformed by myself so if it's impossible it's better not to waste money trying to make it fit.

Thanks in advance,
Nic

you would probably be the first. If the 944 has a transaxle stock..then you would probably be better off with a c5 transaxle with a torque tube from the engine. I hope you highly mechanically inclined becasue it won't be an easy job. You should start off with getting some measurements for the c5 transaxle. How strong is the 944 tranny? would a 911 transaxle fit?

I love those old 944s.

Thanks for the input, Yes, I know it's going to be pretty interesting to make this happen. Renegade hybrids is a site I've checked out, but I like to be the only one to touch my cars

Sounds like I'm gonna have a PITA, but worth it in the end

You will definitely have to modify the trans tunnel. The Porsche differential is in the front. The transmission input shaft is above the differential. The T56 has the differential mounted on the rear of the transmission. This will more than likely cause major interior mods. If your really looking for a 6 speed check out a 968 transaxle. Good for 400lbs+ of torque. Better ratios than the 5 speed turbo trans too and it's almost a direct bolt in.
