Need help/advice on clutch problem. I have an '02 Z28 LS1 / 6 Spd thats acting a little strange. I have only owned the car 1 month. 7-8 Months before I bought it, the previous owner had a Centerforce Dual Friction clutch installed.
The problem I am having is this. When shifting 1-2-3-4 or 4-3-2-1 if I don't feather the clutch out so very, very gently, the car will make a "clunk" sound as though 2 pieces of metal are knocking against one another. The car will not make the sound while driving in gear, only when going into gear when the clutch engages. I have had a few mechanics put up on a lift, isolate the sound, and both have told me the same thing. They have said that due to the aggressive nature of the Dual Friction clutch, when the clutch engages it is making this sound. They have said that is just the way it is, get used to it.
The clutch does engage very solid when running the car hard. However, it seems like normal daily driving has to suffer-?

Hi, Takes 2 ppl. Rock the car back & forth. In gear, engine off. Look at the rear end, driver side. There is a long piece of metal from the front to the rear end. ( I don't know what it's called.) Front of it goes to a rubber bushing. Watch the bottom bolts to see if the metal moves & see a gap when rocking. Bolts need tightening if it does. Think a 21mm size. Hope this helps. Dave

If nothing else checks out, see if the transmission mount is broken. Mine was broken a few years ago and would clunk on shifting. When I replaced the mount, no more clunk. It's a fairly easy and inexpensive fix too.
