Diagnosis needed...
I have been babied my car since I've had it, but finally took it out for a little hard driving. Unfortunately that was cut short because of major shifting issues. Here is a description of what is happening.
What is wrong:
0) Has new master but original slave
1) Shifting in ALL gears, 1-6, is at minimum very hard and notchy, and it seems like the synchros are spinning a lot louder than they should be.
2) About 25% of the time, I can't get the car into 1st gear at a light from neutral. I have to stick it into second gear, then it will go back into first pretty easy.
3) While driving it hard around some winding back roads for about 30 seconds, all of a sudden I couldn't get it into 3-4 at all (maybe 1,2,5,6 as well, but never tried during that time), like they were locked out. They came back after playing with it for a little bit, but I know that should NEVER happen. Also even when driving easy, I sometimes have to play with it a little to get it to go into gear. (ALL gears require this sometimes)
4) Sometimes when downshifting to 1st, even below 10-15mph, it will grind. Haven't noticed it in any other gears, but it's done it 4-5 times in 1st. Downshifting into 2nd, 3rd, and 4th also seems a lot harder than it should be, but hasn't grinded any yet.
5) Sometimes when shifting, I will feel a 'clunk', like the gear just went in and stopped something that was moving really fast. I know that 'clunks' are bad, but don't really know what is causing it... This has happened at least once in each gear 1st-4th.
6) Pressing on the pedal is 3x as hard as my spec 3 was on my lt1.
7) After hitting a big bump, the transmission seems to 'jump' and roll around a little more than it should. (I think the trans and/or motor mounts are worn out, and probably unrelated to the shifting issues)
What is good:
1) Clutch engagement is smooth and and maybe 2" off the floor, right where it should be.
2) No clutch slippage at WOT
3) Doesn't pop out of gear, at least from the 100 miles I've put on the car, it hasn't happened 1 time.
year car, stock clutch?
sounds to me like maybe a combo of problems. grinding can indicate clutch, but resistence to going into gear says trans.
i agree with the above.....bleed the clutch fluid thuroughly and change the trans fluid...see what happens
