BIG problem
The car still accelerates despite the horrific noise, I was able to get it the three miles to home. The M6 has 130k miles on it with some replaced parts, so it's definetly not in tip-top shape.
Can anyone tell what's wrong?
Sounds like you grenaded your rear tho. Probably have a few teeth circulating in the diff causing the noise/racket. If you can hear it while the rear is off the ground, and it sounds like its coming from the back of the car, go ahead and pop the rear cover and see how bad it is...
Does the trans seem like it still shifts ok?

If its coming from under you.....it could be that your clutch disk seperated. I had this happen to me. The grooved hub part of the disk that the input shaft of the tranny goes into seperated from the rest of the disk causing the same horrible sound. I was able to drive the car a few miles and the sound was always there but would get 10x worse if I went above 3000 rpms. It was also difficult to shift since the disk was broke like it was.
Otherwise like said above you can have a diff or internal however unlikely trans issue.

bww3588 was right, that is if you meant the driveshaft. It completely busted today and blendered the underside of my car - I was trying to slow roll to a tranny shop.
That explains the grinding and such - the U-joint must have been damaged, but not fully separated until now.
Erg. Oh well...transmission costs more anyway. =/

Im running an alum driveshaft right now. I figured it was stock, but it has a "Three Rivers" sticker on it. So it might be aftermarket. But thats my weak link right now since my t-56 is built, and I have a strange 12-bolt...

And pyro youre right...a new driveshaft is a blessing as opposed to having to replace the trans or rear.
