Could excess heat from the exhaust(improper heat shielding in my case I think) cause the fluid to turn black more quickly than if it were better shielded(fuel hose and foil tape already on there)?

2nd gear shift is ok, third gets stuck halfway in sometimes and 4th gear is notchy...

I don't slip my clutch much at all, and never race it. Also, 5th and 6th gear almost never give me any problems. Is this because the difference in gear speed and input shaft speed is less and the non-disengagement of the clutch is less noticible,

or do I need a rebuild?

What color is you clutch fluid? After driving the car, when you check the reservoir immediately after shutting down the motor, does the fluid contain any murkiness or is it totally clear?

Hey Mike,

I Did The Drill Mod And It Didnt Help. It Worked For About 10 Shifts Then Faded. Every Time I Bleed The Clutch It Works For A Short Time. It Got To Be The Fluid. Its Pissing Me Off.

Needn't be that aggravating. Just got to accept that regular maint of the fluid is standard if you drive aggressively. I keep the fluid clear and never have pedal woes. Not a hard job to swap the fluid in the reservoir. It's a 2-to-3 minute job a couple times a week once you start with pristine fluid.

The design of the LS-X puts the slave inside the bell housing. Until that design changes, the fluid is going to get cooked quickly if you drive aggressively.

Just follow the protocol precisely until the fluid is truly clean again. Suggest using a DOT4 fluid. Taking Care of Your Clutch

I guess what I was asking was, since only 1-4 give me problems, is it most likely my tranny? Although, sometimes sixth does go in a little notchy. Tomorrow is the big day where I am preparing my car for a trip to the Colorado River. I am gonna do rangers method of just 'swishing' fresh fluid from the resevoir down to the slave and back..

If Rangers method makes my car work for fifteen minutes and then goes back to ****, what does that mean; WWWAAAYYY too much heat in my clutch fluid?

Invest an hour to do repeated changes, following the protocol exactly. If it solves your issue, you're in good shape again. If not, you will have eliminated the root cause for most issues and can move on to the more inconvenient and expensive solution paths.
