Question Where to set shift light?

How far in advance of the rev limiter should I set my shift light to come on?

I have mine set about 500 rpm's before redline. It seems to be in the peak of its power and doesn't fall on its face when I get into the next gear.

it depends upon how fast you shift and what your clutch/flywheel weighs. lighter clutchs and flywheels and/or short shifts means you want to set it closer to the redline (200 to 300 prm ahead) so you get the most out of your powerband and don't give the engine time to lose speed when you let off.
conversely, as you might imagine, heavier (steel) flywheels and longer shifts will allow you to keep a larger gap between shifts (500 to 600 rpms) because the engine will not lose speed as quickly, but you won't get everything out of it that you can.

I'd say about 500 RPMs higher than where your car makes it's peak horsepower. So, say you make peak horsepower at 6,000 RPMs than set your shiftlight at 6,500. That way when you make a shift you stay within your peak power range.
