Default reinstalling the transmission input shaft wont go into pilot bearing

do you guys find it easier to re install a 6 speed trans. on a camaro removing the bell housing and taking the bell housing off after the transmission is out of the car. Or is it easier to put the trans in with the bellhousing attached to the transmission and putting it in the car as one ?

Im putting the trans back as a whole with the bell housing one the trans, but i cannot get the input shaft into the pilot bearing. What could be the problem ? IS it easier to do with the bell housing off the transmission ? Or am i missing something ? I used a clutch alingment tool to put the new clutch and flywheel centered with the pilot bearing, so that shouldnt be my problem. Ive spend a good 3 hours trying to align the input shaft into the hole and its a NO GO !

i usally intall the bell first because once you get the trans in there the bell bolt are hard as hell to get to unless you got broken motor mounts but either way tran to bell bolts are extremly easyer to get to once the trans is in
as far as it not wanting to go in
the first time i pull my trans it went back in with ease
but the last time (two weeks ago) i had same problem it just did not want to go in and i had the clutch alimint tool go in and out without a prob
so i ended up trying put trans in three diff times and then on the fourth i was able to wiggle and play with it enough to get it bolted in, pita, just take your time and probly have a friend help you(i did not) but becarefully to not force it in becase you can push the freze plug in if the trans is not going into the pilot bearing corretly(look it up in search)and its a huge pita
but to anwser your ques put the bell on first and it will make it a lot easyer

same experience for me. Ive changed my clutch 3 different times. This being my forth. The first three times havent been a problem. This time I CANNOT get it to go in. I am having someone help me. We spent the last 3+ hours trying to lift, drop, angle, wiggle the trans. into the right spot, its not happening. Right now i have the whole transmission in with the bell housing attached to the transmission is up in the right place, everything seems to be lined up good, but whats supposed to be happening, isnt. I really dont know what else to do.

I dont think i have to worry about the freeze plug as im still not even that far in yet. Or are you talking about the bearing going in and hitting the freeze plug through ? I still have about 2 inchs or about two / three fingers space at the bottom and top, well all around the bellhousing before the transmission meets the back of the block.

i just went through that a few days ago. mine was hanging on the pilot bearing also. after some bouncing up and down then side to side movement it went in. but the last 1/2 inch or so i had to use the bolts to pull it in the rest of the way. this was my fourth or fifth clutch on a f-body 2 on lt1's and 2-3 on ls1s.

as far as the clutch being aligned check it again. mine was off a tad bit and it was stopping it. when you align it push upon the tool a bit. i tried it both ways with the bell housing on and off. i found it easier to install it with the housing on the motor. it gives you a bit more room to wiggle it and move it around. and this is from my last install.

I just finish my clutch swap two weeks ago. I would recomend to attach the bell house to the mottor first and then the tranny to the bell. It is so much easier, besides you are going to need to wiggle it side to side so that it goes in. Mine gave me a little hard time to go in but after a while it went in enough. The last 1/2 inch it will go in easily if you tight one of the screws up from the tranny to the bell.

Good Luck
