SPEC Stage 2 review inside
I recently installed a SPEC Stage 2 clutch w/ a Kevlar disk and wanted to share my experience. I installed a new 277 master and already had the 145 slave in. Checked out the pilot bearing and it was in perfect shape, so I left it alone. Did the drill mod to the master and got it all back together and bled. I used a Mity-Vac to bleed from the reservoir and couldnt believe how much more air was pulled out even after I bled through the bleeder screw. To my disappointment, the clutch wasnt disengaging all of the way. It was very hard to shift at high rpm and hard to put into R and 1st when sitting still. I put up with it for a week to see if the disk would wear in slightly, but it was still dragging. I decided to try to make the master cylinder adjustable. It took about 1 hour to remove the master, make it adjustable, and get it back into the car. (FYI:The master cylinder U bolt is much easier to get in if you enlarge the holes on the master and on the body of the car.) I adjusted the pedal to about 1/2" higher up than stock and to my amazement, the clutch worked flawlessly. It disenges perfectly now at high rpm. I have about 500 miles on the clutch now and it is chatter free. For people who are looking for a clutch with stock pedal pressure and stocklike drivability, this works well. Now that its broken in, I'll have to get it to the track to see how it holds 3500 rpm launches. Just wanted to let people know how much of a difference an adjustable master cylinder makes!
I used to have a SPEC stage 3 carbon in my 99 SS with my old TPIS H/C combo(350-365 RWHP...weak)! The clutch was ok but I had an issue where the clutch disk blew apart at 700 miles(just after break-in). SPEC sent me another because the trans shop who installed it sent the entire clutch kit back and you could tell there where no signs of abuse. The second clutch kit held well. When Rapid Motorsports did my current H/C combo I had Mikey do a RAM 6130/402 VDS clutch and I love it. The just broken in SPEC went into my 00 WS6(stock). So far its holding good in the T/A but The car has gone through 2 pilot bearings, wonder if its related to the clutch. When I had the SPEC in my 99 SS I didn't have an adjustable master, nor does the WS6, but I now know the only way to go is with an adjustable master.
