Car Constantly Pops Out Of Reverse!
Hey guys,
My car is really becoming a headache for me. I just got the new cam in and was all pumped and now all of a sudden the tranny keeps popping out of reverse. I can't even hold it in gear. Could this be synchros or a bent slide? I hope it isn't the whole gear! Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to hold off til winter to fix the car but lately it is getting very irritating
.
Thanks,
Jeremy

Reverse and 5/6 have a cast iron shift fork with plastic friction tabs. Sometimes those tabs fall apart and the shift fork will not get the synchronizer completly enguaged onto the reverse gear to where it pops out when a load is on it. Reverse has a brass blocking ring and it is syncronized, just not the same setup as a forward gear.
Do you have an aftermarket shifter? If it has shifter stops make sure they aren't holding the shifter from going into reverse completly.

My car did this also. Turns out my reverse gear was rounded off, due to the shift fork being out of spec. I had the reverse gear replaced, the shift fork, all new bearings, seals, synchroniser, and a steel 3-4 shift fork put in. For $850. Now it works perfectly.
$850 bucks!!!! Damn I am in more than i thought. Yes i have a hurst billet plus shifter w/lou's short stick i'll have to check the stops on it. My car use to always pop out but i could hold it. now there is no way to hold it in. thanks for the replies. This is prolly something that i should do as a winter project if i can make it by right? I hate to have the car apart for a good portion of the summer now. Any other advice would be greatly appreciated keep em comin guys!!
