stuck in 4th gear
I have a 02 ss camaro with only 9k miles on it. When i first got it i was driving it and the 6-speed tranny got stuck in 4th gear. After messing with it for a few minutes i got it out and could drive again. At about 6k miles it got stuck again but it would not come out of gear for nothing. I took it to the dealer, they said something came loose inside and rebuilt the trany to be safe so it would not do it again. A coulpe days ago it got suck again like it did the first time and i messed with it for a few minutes and it came out again. I am going to take it back to the dealership, but i was wondering if anyone knew what was causing this problem and is this going to continue? Thanks for any help!
Do a search on here on "stuck in 4th gear." You should return a ton of hits supporting the preliminary diagnosis of *F.U.B.A.R.'ed 3-4 shift fork*
It the only aluminum fork in the tranny, the other 2 are steel (go figure). It usually hoses up the synchros too. Just hammer your boys at the dealer and tell them to make it right.

There was a post by FreakZ from last week or so that describes the problem.
Odds are good that your 3-4 slider has broken the little 3-4 synchronizer keys, and your slider gear has gone past where it should. The part of the keys that are left in the slider gear base get 'stuck' in a lifted position, and prevent you from sliding 4th back in to neutral.
I've got 2 trannies here at my house that have broken 3-4 slider keys, so it's a common problem.
Fortunately it's an easy fix, but unfortunately you have to completely disassemble the trans to get to the parts.
You may have also broken the little plastic shift fork pads.
Wouldn't be a difficult repair for someone with the right tools.

it is more than likely a bent 3-4 shift fork. make sure your shift stops are in! gauranteed to stop the problem of shift over travel. the aluminum shift forks in the f-body and vette are pretty weak. the steel shift fork like in the viper are idea and damn near indestructible.
He just said the 3/4 fork was steel! Listen to Camaroholic he knows what he is talking about! Those parts you need are cheap, it's the labor of tearing it down that sucks. Good luck! I see your car is under warranty, well then you know what to tell them when you take it to the dealership.
