T5 or T56 i am doing a mgb gt v8 conversion. i have an 02 ls1 from a corvette and i am unsure about which transmission to mate up with it. i have heard that the T5 will fit much easier in my mgb (its a very small car) but i was wondering if it could handle the power as well as the T56 could? i would just like to hear some of the pros and cons of the T5 and T56 from some experienced ls1 guys. thanks alot.
Stay away from the T5, it doesn't have a chance of living behind even a stock LS1......even in a light car like yours. GM wouldn't even put a T5 behind a stock TPI 350 that only put out 240hp and 330tq because it couldn't handle the power. It will absolutely grenade with LS1 power. Do yourself a favor and use a t56, it will handle double the power that the T5 will.
Well, you've said the car is small/ light and there is little space. The T56 will also have a shifter position problem in that set up, even after you carve out the tunnel for it. Have you looked at the Tremec 3550? This is the trans line that is sometimes called the TKO. The main reason I suggest this is that it has ability to adjust the shifter position to your car needs and has a narrower profine over the T56. It also has a considerable torque capacity boost over any T5 gear set.There are bells in the aftermarket that match this to nearly any application.
