Default bearing vs. bushing

I've done quite a bit of reading on this and don't really know what to do. My car has about 60K miles on it. I'm in the middle of replacing the clutch. I'm going with the LS7 clutch kit and new slave. Everyone says to replace the pilot bearing. But, with what? An OE replacement bearing? Brass bushing?

Please help, I don't know what to do about this.

Thanks!!

I used a brass bushing thanks to sixspeedsinc recommendation. I've had no problems thus far since my swap, but I only have about 900 miles on the setup.

i also went with the bushing. my thinking on that was if the bearing let go it could take out the input shaft where as the bushing is softer and wont take the input shaft with it. in sure you will be fine with either.

Has anyone tried the ZOOM kevlar pilot bushing ? Suppose to be as strong and reliable as a solid bushing, but lower friction benefits of the roller..

Go with the bronze bushing. Most are impregnated with oil for lubrication and ease of use. You wont have to worry with it seizing up like a bearing.

I just called six speed inc about the bushing. They told me that I can just go to an auto parts store and ask for a bronze pilot bearing for a 69 Camaro with a Muncy 4spd. I trust SSI, but this just sounds strange. Anyone else got their bearing this way?

I was told the same thing, will find out within the next few days. I wouldn't think that they'd find it profitable to give out bad info though...

When i worked on IMCA Modified's (dirt track cars) when we ran a manual trans the team owner/driver/head tech... refused to every use a bearing over a bushing (600+ hp methanal 400ci sbc motors) Because of the posibility of the bearing seizing or coming apart under the high loads and high horsepower ..where as the bushing (well greased ..but not enough to cause the input shaft to keep from going in all the way!) isnt going to come apart or fail in fact we replaced engines before a bushing ever failed (some engines lasted a whole season ...24 races)
Plus the bearings can be pretty darn noisy!
Hope this helps some!

The bearing has 5/16" of contact to the input shaft and the bushing has 5/8".

A good way to make sure you are getting a "real" bronze bushing at the local parts store. Put a magnet to it-if it sticks then it's just a cheap bronze coated bushing probably made in China...

thats what I asked for when I got mine and it fit perfect. I wouldnt use a bearing as my stock one came apart and chewed up my input shaft and forced me to get it resleeved
