Default Pilot bearing depth

When installing a new pilot bearing OR bushing, does it need to be flush with the end of the crank or slightly recessed?

When I removed the old one 3 weeks ago it was slightly recessed.

A search did not find what I'm asking.

I usually put the bearing/bushing in the freezer for a few hours first. Then when ready to install, I put a little heat around the crank where the bearing goes....nothing crazy, just enough to get it to swell a little. Then carefully tap the bearing/bushing in with a socket/hammer, making sure it goes in straight.

AutoZone has a decent bearing race driver toolset on their loan-a-tool program that does a fine job of seating the pilot flush without dinging up the face like a socket can.
