Bass98WS6

I have a '98 WS6 w/M6. When I try to shift into third, the shifter vibrates like crazy, and then will either not go into gear, or pop out of gear if I take my hand off the shifter. This happens sporadically though, occasionally it will accept the shift. It also happens irregardles of hard or soft acceleration, and cold or hot temps. Anyone have any ideas???
