Default Chatter VS gearing

Hey guys,

I just posted a thread about my Cartek clutch and how I hated it because it chattered terribly and it was very grabby (have to keep the revs around 2000 at least to not stall it on take off).

I searched back about a year + and it seems most people who claim to not have chatter problems (despite having the same clutch as people who do) have shorter gearing. In fact, it seemed pretty rare to find anyone with stock gears that claimed their clutch did not chatter.

Now, I have 3.42s with 275/40/18 tires which means I've got pretty tall gearing. Would going to 4.10s alleviate my chatter issues, and make the car more drivable on take-off? It seems most people are happy with their cartek clutch setup and so I wouldn't mind keeping it if I could just make it more streetable.

My main concern is streetability, but with 410rwhp I don't want something that is just gonna slip and blow up in 500 miles.

I would recommend the SPEC stage 2 with the kevlar disc. We had to make the master adjustable to get the engagement point where he wanted it. Once it was finished, it's a really nice setup, especially if your main concern is drivability. I drove a few fbods with various aftermarket clutches and the SPEC stage 2 kevlar is by far the best when it comes to chatter and it is not excessively grabby. centerforce chatters bad I hear and kinda sucks, SPEC stage 3 carbon chatters bad, RAM 910 chatters, too.

When I swapped from 3.42s to 4.11 gears, it helped the chatter quite a bit. I have the RAM 910 disk, btw.

Got this from the RAM website:
REAR END GEARING – High rear end gearing (lower numerically) puts heavier load on the clutch system. If you have ever tried to let out the clutch from a stop in second gear, you likely experienced difficulty getting the vehicle rolling without ‘bogging’ the engine. This same effect occurs when too high of rear gearing is used. This situation also requires the clutch to be slipped more on takeoff to make a smooth transition, resulting in accelerated wear to the clutch.

My car is actually an FRC vette so it does have quite a decent weight advantage. Probably 3200lbs at most vs my Camaro which is 3450 or so. Do you think the Spec Stage II will hold 410rwhp/390rwhp on drag radials in a FRC vette?

I already do have cartek adjustable master so I just need a clutch (and a flywheel would be nice too).

If you get the VDS, make sure that you leave the washers in it that they set it up from RAM. 5 I believe.

We put in one less washer, and it chatters. As soon as we had some miles on it ( And the ringheight was correct) it ceased to chatter.

We did another VDS/910/alum FW with NO chatter.

Gears will definately help aleviate the chatter issues

Louis, how does the 910 with the aluminum flywheel drive on the street?

Its not bad IMO, but it definately take some getting used to.

IT grabs very hard, and is currently our favorite clutch.

For you, I would suggest the 6130 disk because you are never going to put a tire on it are you? Not going to leave the line @5k on the hose either!

I have to get a clutch soon in the FRC, and I think that the VDS,6130,alum. FW is the ticket for my goals. Do it once, do it right
