I have an issue with my third gear engagement. I can shift 1st and 2nd ok and when I depress the clutch and put the shifter into 3rd it's still fine but when I let out the clutch it grinds and pops out of gear. If I hold the shifter in it grinds terribly. I tried to really "pop" it into 3rd but it makes a terrible thumping noise and shakes the whole car. Is this a syncro or maybe a fork. I don't have an aftermarket shifter but I do have a short stick, could that cause any problems?

Very common issue with the T56 . Replace the fork , 3rd gear syncro and shift keys .
