Keep the clutch from grabbing or dragging? I'm assuming you mean dragging...
Unless you cut down the internal stop in a stock adjustable master cylinder, it doesn't. If you are still hitting the stop, then you are still pushing the same volume of fluid regardless of adjustment.
Now, if you are talking aftermarket (like Tick's or the McLeod), they have a larger bore that pushes the additional volume without requiring the additional pedal travel. Basically, if your clutch is dragging, you need to push a greater volume of fluid to get the slave to extend enough to fully disengage the clutch.
