Description:
I have for sale a Navy Blue Metallic 2001 Pontiac Firebird Formula. It has the 5.7L LS1 with 4 speed automatic 4L60E transmission with 120,800 miles on the odometer. Runs and drives just fine, but not a perfect car.
I've done quite a bit of work to it over the past couple months including a new fuel pump, new windshield, passenger power window motor, replaced windshield wiper motor, drivers door hinge pins, bushings & roller/stud combo, passenger headlight motor repair, replaced both driver and passenger headlight bezels and installed new plastic splash guards under the nose on both sides. I performed a cooling system flush with new hoses, including the elimination of the power steering cooler in the upper rad hose. The car has all fresh fluids except for the transmission. (Its on my list, but I just haven't found the time yet.) This is not a complete list of repairs I've performed, but just what I can recall as I write this up.
Items that I have yet to address include the following...
The drivers door lock actuator needs to be replaced. I have the part, but, like the tranny fluid, I just haven't gotten to it. **Fixed**
The muffler will need replaced. I considered doing this, but exhaust note can be a very personal decision and I'd rather not make that choice for the new owner. **Fixed**
Air Conditioning isn't working. I haven't looked into this at all. I can tell you all the components are there (compressor, dryer, condenser, evaporator, & hoses). It could simply need a recharge or it may need a complete overhaul. **Repair in progress**
The same could be said for the body. Everything is present, however if you're looking for a perfect car, it'll need some attention.
There are scratches along the passenger rear quarter panel.
A previous owner used screws through the outside mirrors to secure them on both sides. And there is also another unnecessary fastener screwed into the outside of the drivers door near the mirror. (No one has ever said F-body owners are the smartest guys on the planet.
)
Drivers fender is losing its clear coat and will need a repaint.
Drivers rocker panel is dented. I'm actively trying to get the car into the local body shop to have this repaired. The plan is to leave it in primer, so that any painting can be performed simultaneously. **Rocker has been repaired**
One last thing. Despite the new fuel pump, the fuel gage isn't working. It wasn't functioning prior to the installation, so I figured it was simply the sending unit. However, upon first powering up the new pump/sending unit, the gage didn't come to life. I've performed a check of the gage with my Foxwell NT510 Scanner and the needle sweeps up and down on command. This tells me the gage itself is fine. I've also performed a resistance check on the wiring that comes off the tank and get absolutely no reading. This leads me to believe there is either a wiring issue or the new sending unit is faulty. Wiring seemed fine when we replaced the wire harness for the new pump, so my diagnosis leans toward bad sending unit. However, I purchased the pump/sending unit a number of years ago and no longer have any idea where I got it. Therefore I have no recourse to pursue a replacement. The pump is working fine and until it fails, I would simply live with not having the gage. But I'd like to extend the following offer to anyone who buys the car. If the new owner would like to purchase a new pump/sending unit of their choice, I would be happy install it. It will take some time though, as I wasn't willing to cut a hole in the trunk when I did this the first time. This would also be a perfect opportunity for the new owner to choose and purchase a catback that could also be installed at the same time. As they say, "Lemons to lemonade." **Fuel Gage has been repaired**
I'm asking $10500 obo for the car as it sits now. As I continue to make repairs, the price will go up. I don't need to sell this car, but I have plenty of other projects that could use my attention. So, in short, a reasonable and respectful offer would probably take it home. However, if you're just looking to take a joyride then kick the tires, please find yourself a beat up Trans Am instead. (Throw a stone, you'll hit one.
)
If interested, please contact me via Private Message thru the site and I'll provide you my cell number so we can text and/or chat. I'd be happy to show you the car and take a test drive. Thanks.
Edit: I thought it best to remove my phone number from the public listing.
Edit #2: Updated price to reflect the work that's been done to the car since the initial post.
The driver side was crackling and, upon removal, discovered the cone was torn. Replaced the passenger side as well. The Monsoon system is back to its former glory.
Last week I repaired the horn. The Low Tone wasn't working and I replaced it with a new one.
I also vacuumed down the A/C System and it held for nearly 2 days.
So I proceeded to add a small amount of Oil w/UV Dye and recharged the system with 2 fresh 12oz cans of R134a. And just for good measure, I also installed a new A/C belt.
The car is once again blowing cold air from the vents.
I did scan with a UV Light immediately following the system charge and didn't find any leaks. Once I get the car back on the lift I plan to look again. However I ran the A/C while on a short drive yesterday and it was still ice cold.
Also, I've sourced a good used factory catback from a '99 Formula and will be installing it on this car.
This is a photo of the original that I had removed during the fuel pump installation in January. I don't have a picture of the new one, but can post one as soon as I do. I can assure you its in excellent shape or else I wouldn't be going to the trouble of swapping it.
One last thing, tomorrow I drop the car off at the body shop to get the Drivers Rocker Panel repaired. Once I get it I back (hopefully in about a week or so), and with all of the items I've listed having been repaired, I am going to be asking for more when it comes to price. This will depend on what the Rocker Panel repair costs me. Once I know, I'll update this thread as soon as I can.

I don't believe it's perfect, but it looks 1000 times better than before.
Fuel Gage has also been fixed.
Dropped the tank again to give the wiring another look and found a broken (Grey w/Black Stripe) wire in the loom near the connector that plugs into the harness on the body. Soldered back together & covered in shrink wrap did the trick.
Went ahead and installed the new(ish) catback while things were apart.
The exhaust system is back to its factory spec.
I'm sure the keen eyes here on LS1Tech will notice the missing rear axle from the above photos. Without going into too much detail, let me say I believe I have a bent rear axle and am currently working to rectify this issue. I'll update the thread as things progress.
Drivers side Rear Axle had been replaced, along with a new Bearing and Axle Seal.
Initially I thought I was gonna swap the entire Rear End with one from another car, which is why I had the entire rear axle assembly removed. However, I found a reasonably priced Rear Axle Kit that made me reconsider and ultimately just replace the axle.
I didn't snap a picture of the new axle, but here is the old one along with the old axle seal & bearing and the packaging from the new one.
While the car was apart, I took the opportunity to paint the rear Brake Calipers to match the red ones that are on the front.
I think they turned out pretty good and have me considering doing this to one of my other 4th Gens.
I had a rear brake hose that didn't wanna seal after being taken apart from the caliper (even with new crush washers), so I replaced both outer hoses with new AC Delcos.
These are the old hoses with the new boxes again, because I also didn't take a pic of the new ones. 🤪
I only had one set of keys for this car and a keyless entry fob that didn't work. So after testing the resistor in the ignition key, I sourced a new GM #2 ignition key blank & a door/trunk lock key blank and had them cut. They work perfectly.
I also found a pair of new key fobs from eBay. After a little messing around with a dead battery issue, I was able to program them to the car. They work, but it seems to take a couple of tries of the button to get the car to react. Both fobs behave this way, but considering what I paid for them (and what I could have paid), I'm satisfied with their performance.
The new set is on the right.
One other thing is that the drivers door lock actuator has been replaced. Which is essential when using the new fobs.
It had been a little while since I charged the A/C, so I took another look for leaks. Sure enough I found UV Dye around the rear seal on the Compressor. I have a good used compressor that I'll be swapping into place. I believe this will shore up the A/C System on this car. I'll be sure to update as this progresses.
One last thing, I have raised the price of the car. I have invested more on parts and work into the car than compared to the price hike, but am asking for $1000 more. My asking price is now $10,500 obo.
Here are some fresh shots of the car.

I had some new seals that I installed at the hose connection at the back of the new compressor, added a little PAG 150 w/UV Dye and vacuumed down the system.
Needles didn't move overnight, so I charged the system with 24oz of R134a today.
A/C System is blowing cold again. This car can't be any more ready for Summer cruising.
