Default Carb rebuilders

I'm looking for a shop in the Chicago area thats good with rebuilding/tuning race carbs. Does any one know of any reputable shops or people?

Thanks,

what do you need done? a simple rebuild is easy, if you want it wideband tuned then hop on a dyno.

I've never rebuilt one myself. I figured I'd check and see what the rates were for a rebuild before I decide to tackle it or not.

The carb was already dyno tuned but something has gone haywire with it and it's filling the crankcase with gas.

I'm mechanically inclined so most "car" stuff doesn't bother me but if you think it's easy to rebuild them maybe I should just tackle it. Any advice for a first time rebuild?

Thanks for the response,

~Jim~

what's your fuel pressure? sounds like a stuck float, pull the plugs and spin the motor over and change the oil, then turn on the pump and see what the float levels are, if fuel dumps out it my just be stuck. take a rubber dead blow hammer and tap the needle/seat screws and see if the float pops up. Otherwise you may have junk in the needle/seat and need to pull it and clean them out.

Fuel pressure is set at 6 1/2. Floats stay set under pressure and running condition. I just pulled the plugs last week and changed the oil yesterday. To give you an idea how bad i is it's only been driven 2 miles and hard starts after it runs for a bit (flooding out)

I called Holley today and they thought the needle and seat could be screwed up or like you said needs to be cleaned.

if you were closer i'd offer to help, but gas alone will kill the trip for me.

I appreciate the offer but I don't blame you at all. I have a friend who lives down that way and its a little bit of a drive.

Any tips, diagrams or other sources for good info that you recomend?

Thanks again,

~Jim~

I like it. I don't have any sort of radio/music device in my anymore. It's not necessary.

A little update, I went through the whole carb today. Upgraded my gaskets and cleaned everything up real well. I had a family member help me with it. We got it set to a good spot for intial start up and I fine tuned it when I got it home.

When I got everything buttoned, I tuned the idle a little bit and it ran noticably better. However, after I shut the car down I let it cool down for a bit and tried to fire it back up. I had a little bit of a fire going after a hard start. So I may have taken 1 step up but once again that was matched by two steps back.

I'm going to have to check my timing again and make sure the distributor did not move on me. Otherwise I could have an internal leak in the carb.

Any thoughts?

You were right the carbs are really easy to go through. I can't believe I was nervous about doing that.

Thanks for your help I really appreciate it.
