Other than that, the weather sucks at least 4-5 months of the year, and Chicago politics screw up what would otherwise be a perfectly fine state. If you are into guns, this is not a great place to live (it's worse than CA), no CC permits. Traffic anywhere around Chicago is very bad, maybe not as bad as places like LA, but our expressways generally have less lanes than SoCal so it seems just as bad overall.
As posted above, cost of living will be very high in the Chicagoland area as compared to the rest of IL, but not as bad as CA.
If I was looking to relocate, I probably wouldn't pick IL. I'd rather go a little further south for milder winters and less liberal politics/laws. Don't get me wrong, IL and Chicago do have some very positive points, and it's certainly not the worst place to live, but above all else I'm really sick of seeing snow 4-5 months per year.
