Default The Cold temps are Brutal

Here in Chicago
the Stock 180 T-stat is not warm enough for the LT1. I Freeze my *** off anytime I go anywhere. Do you think its possible to rig up a piece of Card board and set it in front of the Radiator? To keep the Coolant Temp up. I see Semis do it, and people who drive 82 Ford astros.

Thought?/Questions?/Concerns?....Jokes?

put in a 195 thermostat, or I guess if you didn't have the $4 for a new thermostat you could always rig up cardboard, but the first semi-warm day will be overheating.

dude, a thermostat difference of *15 isn't going to make your car any warmer. it will not heat the coolant any better if the t-stat needs *15 more to open up. you wouldn't notice the difference in heat between a 195/180. i didn't notice a difference between my stock one and a 160..

cardboard would work fine, and no one will see it on that particular vehicle. only cover half of the radiator, see how that works.

"dude" I had a 170 in my old SS and when I went back to a 195 thermo the heat worked 80% better at least. Cardboard would work too because it would raise coolant temps, unless the fans turn on and defeat this whole purpose, but like I said stock camaros had perfect heat from the factory, so obviously it's the coolant temp due to a lower than stock thermostat or a plugged heater core, etc.

In my work trucks, I switch between 160 & 180 and all the guys say you feel a big difference. Never tried a 195, but 15 degrees is 15 degrees in my book, cheap test, what can it hurt. Good luck.

unplug the fans and keep an eye on your temps. if it's not getting too hot, then leave them unplugged until the temp gets up a bit more. i heard it's supposed to get a lot colder in a few days.

Well, the temp always stays at around 180. If I am sitting in traffic for more than 5 min, yeah eventually it will raise to around 200 but not long enough to get to 220 when the fans will kick on. As soon as I start rolling or get on to I-90 It stays just at 180. My issue with a 198 is that the PCM will think I have a 180 still and I dont want to go down that road with problems. Thats even if a 198 is offered for the LT1.

I am going to try two strips of Cardboard and place one near the top and bottom of the radiator so the middle is still open. Just got to figure out a way to keep them in place...

I've been taking the Brown line in because I'm having my jeep lifted. But when I drive it in on cold days, the inside of the Jeep is nice and warm, just as I am parking at work.

you mean ford aerostar, or chevy astro?

anyways, i say go with the cardboard, but only cover less than 1/2 the radiator, and if the temps get too high, pull over and take the board out.

My Camaro has been staying around 185-190 these past few weeks. I start it up in the morning ten minutes before I leave, and when I get in, it is around 170.

My Z28 takes about 15 minutes of driving to reach full temp, and heat on full blast will keep me warm, but not make me hot.

My old work van I covered half the radiator with cardboard, it worked like a charm. I haven't had to do that with the new one since I got a 2004, but as it gets colder it's not getting hot enough fast enough yet, so I may put a little cardboard in there.
