Nighttime photos

Well i went out tonight tried to take some nighttime pics and it didn't go well at all. i am new to photography. i have a d3000 with a couple lenses. 35mm 1.8, 18-70mm and 70-300mm. i also have and was trying to use an old sb-24 external flash. i do have a tripod but its an inexpensive one. my main problem was with lighting(i know duh its the most important part). i kept getting glare from flash and my backround kept getting really dark.

so lets see some pics you guys have taken and talk about how you did it and what kind of equipment you used.

I always just opened the aperature (F stop) as much as possible, placed the camera on a tripod and just held a long exposure.

that looks nice, did you use some kind of diffuser to soften the glare from the flash?

This. Kind of a pain, but some pretty cool shot's can come of it.

Yep. No flash, just a nice tripod and a kit lens

However, FWIW, a nice flash setup (if you're doing a photoshoot in a private location) is a great investment as far as good pictures go.
